I have not been so excited about a birthday since I was 8 and I ~~knew~~ suspected that my parents were getting me a Lisa Frank sticker box ( with hundreds of stickers!) - the one with the otters and other marine life! They put the box at the bottom of my bed so when I woke up it was the first thing that I saw. I almost cried with happiness. I kept hugging everyone and stroking the box lovingly. Also, there were pancakes.

No but really, I have not felt this good in a really long time.

I’m tingling with so much positivity and excitement.

And thankfulness.

So much thankfulness.

Black Indian woman circa 1900.

This is Diana Fletcher who was a Black/Kiowa woman.

I have heard that she was Seminole and married and/or adopted Kiowa.

Diana Fletcher was of African and Seminole heritage by blood but was raised primarily by her African father and her Kiowa step mother. Fletcher’s paternal grandparents were born Free in Africa but Fletcher’s father was born into slavery in Virginia. As a child he was sold to a white master in Florida but he eventually ran away and lived with the Seminole people, who also kept him in some form of bondage. Eventually he married Diana Fletcher’s mother, a Seminole woman, but she died during their forced removal (Trail of Tears) to Oklahoma. In Indian Territory, Fletcher’s father remarried and his Kiowa wife taught Diana Fletcher in the Kiowa tradition. She is remembered for having been very knowledgeable and talented in Kiowa arts and crafts - particularly sewing and basket weaving.

“So the settler state is presumed within queer theory, while (as mentioned previously) indigenous nationhood is imagined as simply a primitive mirror image of a heteronormative state. However, many Native scholars and activists are offering internal critiques of contemporary Native politics to imagine potentially nonheteronormative forms of indigenous nationhood. As Taiaiake Alfred, Glen Coulthard, Denetdale, and others note, Native sovereignty struggles are themselves often articulated within, rather than in resistance to, the logics of settler colonialism. That is, articulations of Native governance and sovereignty often mimic the logics of the settler state rather than draw on forms of indigenous governance that call into question many of the logics of nation-state forms of governance. As they argue, Native sovereignty struggles often focus on gaining recognition from the surrounding settler state. To gain this recognition, Native nations model themselves after colonial states, mirroring their similar colonial logics. Coulthard explains that this politics of recognition also entraps colonized peoples in a death dance with their colonizers. The “key problem with the politics of recognition when applied to the colonial context … [is that it] rests on the problematic assumption that the flourishing of Indigenous Peoples as distinct and self-determining agents is somehow dependent on their being granted recognition and institutional accommodation from the surrounding settler-state and society. … Not only will the terms of recognition tend to remain the property of those in power to grant to their inferiors in ways that they deem appropriate, but also under these conditions, the Indigenous population will often come to see their limited and structurally constrained terms of recognition granted to them as their own. In effect, the colonized come to identify with ‘white liberty and white justice.’” He calls on indigenous activists to shift their focus from seeking recognition from the settler state to seeking recognition from each other as well as other oppressed communities.”

Please stop reblogging those photos of the ‘Miami Zombie’ attack. The man that was attacked has a name, it’s Ronald Poppo. He is 65 years old and he is in critical condition, fighting for his life. There isn’t anything funny about this situation. It really disturbs me that so many folks are not even thinking twice about circulating graphic photos or making zombie jokes. Have some respect for a human life - please.

I don’t think the people making posts like this understand how people work.

Many many people, when frightened and worried, make jokes to cope. They turn something horrifying, like the realization that there’s absolutely nothing keeping some guy on drugs from trying to eat their face and sending them to the hospital when all they’re doing is walking down the street, into a joke. So they can deal with it. So they can laugh at that reality instead of curling up and crying over what a scary place the world is. And I think that as much as the victim of that attack deserves respect, other people and their subconscious ways of coping with the horrors of the world deserve respect as well.

Actually, I do understand how “people work”. While some people may be frightened or worried that something similar may happen to them, I’m almost certain that is not the source of the majority of the jokes that I have seen coming across my dashboard. Additionally, someone’s need to cope/deal with something by laughing instead of curling up and crying does not trump the need to have respect for Ronald Poppo or any other victim - EVER. This man has suffered the trauma of this event more severely than anyone else. He has a right to privacy. Circulating graphic photos of his wounds is completely inappropriate and disrespectful to him, his family and anyone that cares for him.

If someone were to take photos of me after I had been violently assaulted and shared them on the internet and made memes and jokes out of the incident because it made them feel better or safer to do so are you really telling me that I should just have to respect their process and not speak up against it?

I really can’t believe this is even a ‘dialogue’ right now. Said a woman who has been trained to work with survivors of trauma.

The Peruvian government declared a 30-day state of emergency on Monday, following violent protests against a copper mine near the city of Cusco, which left two people dead and more than 70 injured last Sunday.

During the state of emergency, police will be in charge of controlling the southeastern province of Espinar, located approximately halfway between Cusco and Lake Titicaca. Civil liberties such as the right of assembly will be suspended. Other rights such as free passage and inviolability of the home will also be suspended.

Newspaper forced to apologize to Penan after false incest claims

A Malaysian paper has been forced to apologize after publishing a highly controversial report, which accused the Penan tribe of practising incest.

It is the latest in a string of inaccurate and derogatory stories about the Penan and their way of life in the Malaysian press.

The front-page article in the Malay language tabloid Metro Ahad was entitled, ‘My mother’s my wife, my father’s my husband’, and claimed incest was common amongst nomadic Penan communities in the Ulu Baram area.

But the paper was forced to withdraw the article and apologize publicly after a Penan chief in the Ula Baram area went to the police.

Balan Balang said, ‘We the Penans, condemn the report which is written and based on lies. The report has resulted in our community being despised. The report makes the Penan look like animals.’

His complaint forced Metro Ahad to concede, ‘We have been informed that the Penans do not practise incest’.

The extent of the article’s controversy also reportedly prompted Sarawak’s Chief Minister, who is personally responsible for the destruction of much of the Penan’s forest, to advise people not to make negative remarks about any race.

Another recent scandal involving the misrepresentation of the Penan was published in The Borneo Post, which is owned by KTS, a Malaysian Timber company.

The article allegedly misquoted a Penan leader saying his tribe no longer wanted to opposelogging or to work with environmental groups in the area.

However, in a sign the Penan are no longer willing to accept misrepresentation of their views, he has since demanded a full apology saying the words were put ‘irresponsibly and unethically into my mouth’.
